Holiday Decor
We love that you are decorating your home for the holidays! It is an exciting and fun way to show your seasonal personal taste. While it is tempting to buy all the holiday decorations; Signature Cabinet Studio would recommend keeping the following guidelines in mind for your cabinetry.
Garland
Around the holidays, Garland seems inevitable in homes. Please do not place these on the face of your cabinets. The garland will often scratch the surface of wood from the foliage and wires. There may not be immediate visible scratches, but over time the scratches will become noticeable on any finish. This can void the warranty on your existing cabinets.
Do Not hang anything on your cabinet doors
In order to hang decorations on your cabinet doors, adhesives or nails are often used. These will damage the face and finish of your cabinet door and potentially void the warranty. While opening and closing the door, the cabinet door can become scratched or dented from any decoration applied to the door.
Adhesives & Nails
Adhesives and nails are not recommended to hang or place any decorations. Adhesives have potential to seep into the wood and stain, expand, or compromise the finish. Nails and screws are also not recommended when trying to place decorations on cabinets. Nails and screws compromise the finish, potential to split the wood, can lead the cabinet to excess water exposure, and potential warping issues.
Temporary Stickers or Decals
Temporary stickers or decals on cabinets should be avoided. The mixture of moisture and chemicals in these will often seep into the wood. It creates a permanent ‘greasy’ spot on your cabinetry, it can pull off the finish on your cabinets, and/or cause bubbling underneath the surface.
What Can I Decorate with?
Here is a list of things that you can do for decorations or where we recommend:
On top of your cabinets - be aware of things falling, touching the face of your cabinets, anything that is electronic or has heat to prevent burning or fires.
Countertops - Placing decorations on a countertop is recommended, please make sure to pick up and place; to not drag your decoration across the surface.
Decorations without wires - Some garland is wire free and sometimes made with fabric. We recommend these types of decorations over the wired.
Shelving - If you have floating shelves in your kitchen, utilizing this space for decorations is a great alternative to incorporate the holidays.
Lighting - If you have an descending light fixtures that you can change out lightbulbs or hang non-flammable decorations, this can be a playful way to include the holidays.
Backsplash - Utilizing your backsplash to lean decorations or to temporarily hang items keeps most clutter off your countertops.
Windows - This is a charming way to include your garland in your kitchen without sacrificing your cabinetry. There are many different ways to style this as well!
There are many unique ways to bring the holiday mood without sacrificing the quality and finish of your cabinets. You can decorate the way you desire, just remember that you may be risking voiding the warranty on your cabinetry.
